This session provides a clinically grounded overview of neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2), focusing on diagnosis, disease progression, and current treatment pathways. It will outline key differences between NF2-related tumours and sporadic acoustic neuromas, including typical patterns of tumour behaviour, associated hearing loss, and the role of genetic testing in establishing diagnosis. The session will also review multidisciplinary management approaches in the Canadian context, including treatment planning considerations and access to emerging or investigational therapies. Emphasis will be placed on evolving care strategies and how advances in molecular and clinical research are shaping future options for patients with NF2.
Dr. Suganth Suppiah is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto and a Surgeon-Scientist at Toronto Western Hospital (UHN). He completed his medical degree at Western University and neurosurgical training at the University of Toronto, along with a PhD focused on the molecular biology of peripheral nerve sheath tumours. He subsequently completed a fellowship in complex peripheral nerve surgery at the University of Calgary. His clinical practice focuses on neurofibromatosis-related tumours and peripheral nerve and spine tumours, with a research program centred on understanding the genetic and molecular drivers of disease and developing novel therapeutic approaches.
